Comparing Dry suits And Wetsuits For Scuba Diving

A lot of people who have never engaged in scuba diving do not know whether wetsuits are better than dry suits or if the vice versa is true. Both the wetsuit and the dry suit would be ideal for the sport but when making your decision, ensure that you consider the type of climate you expect to be scuba diving in. If you are going to be scuba diving in a cold area, then a dry suit is the best choice for you. A wetsuit will be the best option for you if you will be scuba diving in warm waters.

Dry suits and wet suits are a requirement when scuba diving because they act as insulators from the cold winter air, water temperatures and extreme heat thereby preventing cases of hypothermia while diving. They are also used in inland surfing sports such as wake surfing and Whitewater stand up paddle boarding. Both suits are used to protect divers from the cold and ensure that they are comfortable as they study marine life. Though they typically have the same function, the two suits are made of different materials there is therefore a difference in how they are used. This article will be looking at the major differences between wetsuits and dry suits so you can be in a position to make the best choice.

We will look at the dry suits first. If you intend on diving or surfing in cold weather, then a dry suit is the right choice for you because it will keep you warmer than a regular wetsuit. Cold water divers wear dry suits since they are thin and loose so they are able to wear other clothes underneath the suit to help them retain heat even in coldest of waters. Dry suits are made from either neoprene or membrane, both of which are waterproof materials. It is important to note that dry suits are not designed to work on their own which is why you have to wear undergarments when you have a dry suit on. A dry suit is a bit more challenging to use because there is air trapped in it. A special course should be taken so one can learn how to control the buoyancy in the suit.

We will also look at the wetsuit. You should buy a wetsuit if you intend to dive or surf in cool or warm waters. Unlike a dry suit, a wetsuit is designed to cling onto a diver’s body. Wetsuits are made from neoprene and the thickness of the material is wholly dependent on the kind of waters you intend to dive in. When you wear a wetsuit while diving, water will be trapped between your body and the suit and this is what will keep you warm. The water will then be warmed by your body thereby ensuring that your body temperature is regulated. If you want to dive during the summer, a wetsuit is the best choice but if you intend to dive during the winter, always go for dry suits.
